About Me

Picture
I am a moral and political philosopher. My work is primarily about freedom, work, and capitalism. Currently, I am developing a theory of freedom based on the idea that free activity must be intrinsically rather than extrinsically motivated. I approach these topics in part through an engagement with various historical figures, including Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, and especially Marx. You can find out more about my research here.

My paper "Freedom, Desire, and Necessity: Autonomous Activity as Activity for Its Own Sake" is forthcoming in the Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy. You can find an uncorrected draft of that one on my PhilPeople page. Drafts of three other papers currently under review are available from me on request: a paper on coercion and incentivization, a paper on Marx's concept of alienated labor, and a paper on meaningful work.

Since August 2020, I have been an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Clemson University. I completed a Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of Chicago, an M.A. in Philosophy at Tufts University, and a B.A. in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Oxford. Here is my abridged C.V.; a full C.V. is available from me on request.
